The interdisciplinary Research Training Group 1876 “Early Concepts of Man and Nature: Universal, Local, Borrowed” established by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz invites applications for

starting on October 1st, 2017. Initial appointment will be for two years. Subject to continued funding by the German Research Foundation, a further appointment for one more year will be made.

The Research Training Group is directed by scholars from the fields of Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Pre- and Protohistorical Archaeology (Pleistocene Archaeology), Near Eastern Archaeology, Classical Archaeology, Classics (Greek and Latin), Byzantine Studies, and Medieval German Studies.

In the Research Training Group’s research programme, the object is to record concepts of man and nature in the Near Eastern, Northeast African and European area in the period from ca. 100.000 years B.C.E. until the Middle Ages – starting out from textual, pictorial and material sources – by means of examples and to study them in a culturally immanent as well as transcultural respects. In order to align the spectrum of potential fields of topics in a targeted manner four main focal points of research have been defined:
(1) Primordial conditions and elements, the origin and the end of the world;
(2) Natural phenomena, the forces of nature, and natural catastrophes;
(3) Flora, fauna, and natural environment;
(4) The conceptualization of the human body, of disease, healing and death.
Topics for PhD theses must be chosen from one of these four areas and belong to one of the academic the disciplines mentioned above.

We are looking for dissertation projects that will connect with and complement dissertation projects within the Research Training Group as well as dissertation projects belonging to one of the four areas.

Yale University intends to appoint a Postdoctoral Associate in Egyptology for the academic year 2016-17. The
activity of this postdoctoral position is two-fold:
a. research and writing in collaboration with the scholarly activities of Egyptology at Yale University;
b. teaching one course per term; a total of two courses per academic year;

This postdoctoral associate position is funded by the William K. and Marilyn M. Simpson Endowment for
Egyptology, administered by the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department at Yale
University. This position will also be affiliated with the Yale Egyptological Institute in Egypt, which sponsors
research and instruction in the philology and cultures of ancient Egypt and Nubia. Egyptology courses at Yale
present the history, languages, and archaeology of ancient Egypt and her neighboring regions from the earliest
pre-dynastic through the Coptic period. Lectures, seminars, and reading courses cover topics such as art history,
administration and society, burial practices, ceramic technology, military history, Egyptian languages of all
periods (including Coptic), among others.

In addition to the curriculum, Yale’s academic activities in Egyptology include a wide range of visiting scholars,
close affiliation with the Peabody Museum and Beinecke Library, and there are active archaeological missions
in Egypt. The postdoctoral associate will be expected to take an active part in these activities; it is hoped that
s/he will organize at least one substantial international conference during the period of the postdoctoral
appointment.

The initial appointment is for one year, thereafter renewable (contingent on satisfactory performance), with an
additional one-year appointment. A Ph.D. in Egyptology is required, as is a broad and solid knowledge of or
about Egyptology in all its sub-fields, from prehistory to the end of the Coptic period. Demonstrated ability in
language instruction is desirable. The annual salary is $55,000, plus healthcare benefits.

The Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Department of the Middle East is offering a position for researchers in the field of Ancient Near Eastern Studies.
Eligibility: This position is open to researchers with a PhD degree in Ancient Near Eastern Studies or a related field. The candidates must hold their PhD degree at the time of applying for the position or guarantee that they will receive it before the beginning of the position.
Research focus: Philology, History, Cultures of the Ancient Near East.
We expect candidates with experiences in grant activities, a proven publishing record and a working knowledge of an Ancient Near Eastern language.

Terms:

The position is open beginning by September/October 2016. The duration of the position is 3 years with the possibility of extension. The Institute will provide an office space, computer, proofreading services, library services (including a modest amount for books purchase), and funding for conference or research trips abroad. Researchers are expected to be in residence at the Oriental Institute in Prague. During their residence, researchers are required to produce academic publications and participate in all Oriental Institute seminars and other events. This is a non-teaching position. We reserve the right not to fill this position.

[AMI] Bourse doctorale 2016/2017 à la mobilité sur la Péninsule arabique

Bourse doctorale d’aide à la mobilité internationale 2016/2017 sur la Péninsule Arabique.

Le CEFAS propose une bourse d’Aide à la mobilité internationale (AMI), attribuée par le Ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Développement international, à des étudiants doctorants qui sont ou seront inscrits en thèse dans une université française à la rentrée universitaire 2016, et qui effectuent leur recherche doctorale sur la région de la péninsule arabique dans le domaine des Sciences Humaines et Sociales. L’obtention de la bourse est conditionnée à l’inscription en thèse.
Le CEFAS cherche en particulier à renforcer la formation doctorale dans le domaine des Etudes contemporaines, sur les monarchies du golfe Arabo-persique.

Cette Aide à la mobilité internationale (AMI) est attribuée pour une période de 12 mois, renouvelable une fois.
Le montant de l’aide est de 1 800 € par mois et d’un billet d’avion A/R pour le Koweit depuis la France.
Le boursier devra résider au Koweit. Il devra séjourner dans la région du Golfe durant au moins 9 mois dans l’année, et pourra effectuer des missions de travail dans les pays de la zone de compétence du CEFAS, à l’exclusion du Yémen (Koweit, Bahrein, Emirats Arabes Unis, Qatar, Sultanat d’Oman, Arabie Saoudite). Il lui reviendra de trouver lui-même à se loger.
Il est rappelé que l’AMI n’étant pas considérée comme un salaire, elle n’ouvre droit ni aux prestations sociales, ni aux allocations chômage et ne peut être prise en compte dans le calcul des droits à la retraite. Les bénéficiaires doivent donc souscrire eux-mêmes les assurances nécessaires pour une résidence à l’étranger concernant la couverture des dépenses de santé, accidents du travail et rapatriement.
La bourse prendra effet au 1er octobre 2016.
